“Sometimes when you shoot a car things go awry, the first time i went to shoot Kevin Boulton’s immaculate LH Torana, he was 4 mins from the meet point and rang me to say “it might not make it”. i met up and sure enough it was knocking pretty bad. so he drove it home and when he pulled it apart the crank was in two pieces, Oh dear!
But since that engine was a budget built 330 stroker with mild VN heads, a Harrop manifold and a crane 280 solid cam and ran 11.1 @ 119mph, it was only a matter of time till it decided it had enough (after 5years hard labour!). lucky it lasted as a wedding car the day before! and since Kevin knew it wouldn’t last, he already had in mind what the next step in the Torrie’s future would be.
As soon as he had the engine pulled down, the new list of parts was on order and other parts in the machine shop getting a good grinding (we all love a good grinding), parts include Scatt crank , Scatt H-beam rods and Arias forged flat tops taking it to 360 cubes, the heads were ported and a custom ground Crane solid roller cam made, Ignition is an MSD 6AL and topping all that is a Holley 750HP street carb, down the back it’s followed closely by a Tri-matic built by DTM transmissions, a 5000rpm Allfast stall converter and 9″ diff with mini spool, billet axles and 4.11 gears. the convertor was made for the old combo and on its first pass it ran 10.9 @ 121mph with wheel spin and a slipping converter” On the dyno the converter was flaring to 6200rpm” kevin said, hence the wheels up launches photos!!! on the last Wednesday night drag meet with old small converter and 150 shot of gas it went 10.28 @ 131 mph!!
The car itself is clean and svelte, nothing that doesn’t need to be there is needed, Inside is just a B&M shifter, racing seats and harnesses plus some gauges and a monster tacho. even the back seat is in mint condition and factory looking. In the engine bay where the newly fitted combo sits, it’s just as neat as the inside, some anodised parts with earls fittings and silicon hoses and some braided lines to the chromed fuel reg which sits on the inner guard, and a catch can up the back. even with that thin air filter the engine sits a tad too high for the stock bonnet, so a VN SS scoop makes it as a subtle reminder of what lies beneath. speaking of which the exhaust consists of std pacemaker extractors with twin 2.5″ exhaust and 3″ hooker mufflers, and from the rear it looks brilliant.
Rolling stock consists of HQ brakes on the front and F100 drums on the rear. wheels rears are 15/8 weld drag-lights with a 3.5″ backspace and fitted with 255/60/15s , fronts are either 15/3s with 165/70s or 15/7s with 205/65s. depending on what the days intentions are and you have to admit by the photos, it sits just right, no matter where your eyes are, it’s just straight as a dye,” I had a mate paint it white around 4 years ago” kevin said, and it still shines like a white Pointer carving it’s way through a school of slow Sunday drivers. So next time you think of passing a neat streeter, check the plates, cause this one has “Mumbo”
all action shots were taken under strict supervision on a private road, do not attempt this if your a muppet
